Want to save gas? Bus can help

ST. PETE BEACH - The city Recreation Department is offering residents a chance to hop on the bus to attend events in Tampa and downtown St. Petersburg.

This is the first time the city is offering the service, said Natalie Strong, city public information officer.

Buses will take residents to special events such as Friday's Women's Life Expo at the Florida State Fairgrounds and next week's trip to Tropicana Field for the Suncoast Home Remodeling Show.

"We're just charging actual cost in order to help residents be more involved," Strong said. "Getting to events this way may be fun, especially if people get together with friends and take the bus as a group."

Registration for the women's expo is now closed, but residents can still get in on the home remodeling show trip on Sept. 29. The bus departs from the Don Vista Cultural Arts Center, 3300 Pass-a-Grille Way, at 10:30 a.m. and will return about 3:30 p.m. The fare is $17 per person, and there are 20 seats. The registration deadline is Monday. Call the Recreation Department at 363-9245 or 363-2146.

It's time for St. Pete Beach's annual co-ed and women's softball league, which will be held at Egan Field, 9101 Blind Pass Road.

The co-ed team plays Wednesday nights and the women's league on Friday nights. The cost per team is $330.

Teams and players must register and pay by Monday. Call Amanda Page at 363-9245 or 363-2146.

Treasure Island

The Treasure Island Causeway drawbridge will be closed to traffic today between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. for a concrete pour. Westbound traffic on the Treasure Island Causeway will be turned back at 79th Street to Causeway Boulevard N or S. Eastbound traffic will detour at 104th Avenue, except for local traffic to the Treasure Island Yacht Club and Paradise Boulevard.

Detour routes to and from Treasure Island during the bridge closure are the Madeira Beach Causeway to the north and the Corey Causeway in St. Pete Beach to the south. The Treasure Island Causeway Bridge will be operational for marine traffic.

News for the Beaches Neighborhood Notebook may be e-mailed to SPTimeslistings@yahoo.com or mailed to Lorrie Lykins, P.O. Box 4954, Seminole, FL 33775. The deadline for inclusion in the Wednesday Neighborhood Times is the previous Friday.
