  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Teams to battle for bragging rights

A look at a prep football game tonight.

RIVERVIEW High (SHARKS) at BRANDON high (EAGLES)

WheN: Tonight, 7:30

Where: E.F. McLane Stadium, 1101 Victoria Ave., Brandon

What for: Area scatback bragging rights are up for grabs. Brandon (1-3) likely will pin its hopes on Mike Brown. We say likely because disciplinary measures have led to Brown starting only one game this season. Still, he had 236 yards on 26 carries in that game, a 27-26 victory over Durant. Riverview (3-0) will counter with the diminutive yet powerful duo of Jahleel Addae and Antwain Powers. They teamed up for 150 yards in Riverview's last win, a 19-13 triumph over Lake Gibson on Sept. 8.

What fare: Down To The Bone Barbecue, 110 S Kings Ave. There's no seating at this small restaurant just south of State Road 60, but it's still a worthy pursuit. Various meats are cooked over oak in "Horse," a 250-gallon smoker that was put in place with a giant crane. Our suggestion: Go east toward the high school, follow the flavorful smell and then do some old-school tailgating at McLane Stadium.

What wear: Shirt sleeves. Temperature at kickoff will be a balmy 79 degrees, according to weatherunderground.com. Light winds and 61 percent humidity. Skip the umbrella: There's just a 10 percent chance of rain.

Last year: Brown fielded a punt with 45 seconds left and returned it 50 yards to Riverview's 38-yard-line. The dazzling, spinning return helped set up Wesley Skiftington's game-winning 51-yard field goal as time expired to give Brandon a 15-14 upset win over Riverview. The loss was the only blemish on Riverview's regular-season record. Hey Sharks, can you spell R-E-V-E-N-G-E?

Mascot matchup: The shark is bigger and stronger, but unless it can make a perfectly timed leap out of the water and snare the eagle, it's never going to discover whether the American bird really tastes like chicken. Call it a draw.
