City denies condo tower for West Shore district

BEACH PARK - The City Council last week denied a request to tear down an office building and build condominiums.

The plan by ATIVAS Development Group proposed a 233-unit condominium at 5600 Mariner St.

"The West Shore business district is the largest business district in the state of Florida," said the developer's attorney, Truett Gardner. "What it severely lacks is multifamily to serve these offices, to cut down commute times."

But several neighbors spoke out against the project, citing traffic and water usage concerns.

"Office use, people are there Monday through Friday," said Emmy Purcell Reynolds, president of the Beach Park Homeowners Association. "They are not there at night, they are not there on the weekends."

City staffers presented the council with five pages of objections to the plan. Council members voted unanimously to deny it.

NORTH HYDE PARK - The Animal Coalition of Tampa is offering low-cost vaccinations and microchip identification for dogs and cats at its clinic, 1719 W Lemon St.

Vaccination packages range from $27 to $50. Individual shots also are available for rabies and distemper for $10 each. Microchips are $20 and include a lifetime registration.

The services are available by appointment every Friday except for the last of each month. Call 250-3900 or go to www.actampa.org.

Work begins on section of 40th Street widening plan

EAST TAMPA - City and community leaders this week kicked off construction on a segment of the 40th Street widening project.

The segment extends from Hanna Avenue to Hanlon Street. The widening project will improve stormwater, water and wastewater infrastructure and add street lights, sidewalks, landscaping and a bridge. Once completed, the widening will increase vehicle capacity and improve safety for motorists and pedestrians on 40th Street.

The $25.1-million project is expected to be completed in October 2008.

Youth programs will honor students for 'doing right'

COLLEGE HILL - The Derrick Brooks Charities Youth Programs will honor local students during the 10th annual "Caught Doing Right" nationwide celebration.

Students chosen by schools, churches and community-based organizations will be honored for doing what is expected of them without getting into crime or violence.

Last year, the Tampa-Hillsborough Urban League honored 65 youths.

This year's event begins at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of College Hill, 3838 N 29th St. Call 231-1340, ext. 252.
