For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

All games at 7:30 unless noted
Alonso (2-1) at Jesuit (3-1)
This marks the second time in three weeks the Ravens have played on Himes Ave. First time: Ravens 27, Tampa Bay Bucs 0. Maybe Jon Gruden should skip across the street and check out the Tigers. Might learn something. Tigers have averaged 29 points. Bucs: 1 1/2.
Knight's pick: Jesuit; Purks' pick: Jesuit
Berkeley Prep (0-3) at Tampa Catholic (3-1)
Gotta give it up for state representative/head football coach Bob Henriquez. In a little more than a year Henriquez has turned TC from a laugher into a "Look Who's Laughing Now!"
Knight: TC; Purks: TC
Bloomingdale (0-3) at Tampa Bay Tech (0-4)
Who? What? When? Where? Why? Seriously: Why? Why hasn't Bloomingdale had a winning season in 19 years of existence?
Knight: Bloomingdale; Purks: Bloomingdale
Riverview (3-0) at Brandon (1-3)
Riverview: Run, run, run. Brandon: What? The Eagles rushed for more than 300 yards in a 27-26 victory over Durant. In their three losses they've barely rushed for 200 yards total. Go figure.
Knight: Riverview; Purks: Riverview
Sickles (0-4) at Plant (3-0)
The Gryphons are averaging fewer than five points a game, the Panthers more than 30. You do the math.
Knight: Plant; Purks: Plant
Cambridge (2-1) at Bishop McLaughlin (2-1), 4:30 p.m.
Bishop McLaughlin is the first Catholic High School opened (in Spring Hill) by the Diocese of St. Petersburg in more than 40 years. The $22-million facility was opened Aug. 11, 2003. The school was named after the first bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Bishop Charles McLaughlin. The Bishop was nicknamed "Hurricane Charlie," hence the school's nickname: Hurricanes.
Knight: Bishop; Purks: Cambridge
George Jenkins (0-4) at Durant (2-2)
A Cougar growls over the loudspeaker every time Durant scores. There'll be lots a growlin' tonight. Jenkins has allowed an average of more than 30 points a game.
Knight: Durant; Purks: Durant
Freedom (2-2) at Gaither (2-1)
Perhaps next week, no news will come out of Freedom.
Knight: Gaither; Purks: Gaither
Wharton (4-0) at King (2-2)
Big Daddy, A.K.A. King coach Joe Severino, has the Lions at .500, a vast improvement considering they lost 18 in a row before Week 2 of this season. But Lions probably will be 2-3 after tonight.
Knight: Wharton; Purks: Wharton
Hillsborough (3-1) at Jefferson (3-1)
Armwood beat Hillsborough and Jefferson, but Armwood's offense, quite frankly, didn't do squat against the Terriers' or Dragons' defenses. Tonight's game, when all is said and done, just might feature the county's best teams.
Knight: Jefferson; Purks: Jefferson
Robinson (2-1) at Leto (1-2)
The following information supplied by Soapoperadigest.com. This week on All My Children: For their "night out," Kendall and Ryan went to the club and Ryan wanted Kendall to forget about the baby for one night (but it didn't look promising when Kendall immediately whipped out baby pictures to show anyone and everyone). ...More exciting than Knights vs. Falcons? Maybe.
Knight: Robinson; Purks: Robinson
Plant City (1-3) at Newsome (1-3)
There's still some small town in this big ol' county, as this game attests.
Knight: Newsome; Purks: Newsome
Tampa Baptist (1-2) at Bradenton Prep (1-2)
Don't confuse Bradenton Prep with Bradenton Christian. Bradenton Prep lost to Cambridge 27-20 and Tampa Baptist beat Bradenton Christian last week 43-20. Tampa Baptist also lost to Cambridge 19-0. That clear things up. Right?
Knight: Tampa Baptist; Purks: Bradenton
BLAKE (1-2) vs. MIDDLETON (2-2), 3:30
Tailgating. Afternoon game. Raymond James Stadium. Tampa Bay Bucs? No. Blake vs. Middleton.
