Heavily armored

By NICOLE JOHNSON
Published September 23, 2006

It weighs about as much as the Hubble space telescope and looks like a Hummer on steroids. Meet the GPV Sergeant 4x4, a super-sized rescue vehicle. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office recently bought the vehicle from a Michigan manufacturer for about $337,000. Officials say it will come in handy in hurricanes, hostage situations and rescue attempts. Pinellas is the first in Florida to have a GPV. The only other vehicle like it in the country is fighting crime in Knoxville. It's not the only armored vehicle in the area though. Tampa police recently unveiled an aluminum, 12-ton armored personnel carrier of their own. They bought it as military surplus and refurbished it.
