  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Volleyball this week

CITRUS

The 'Canes have struggled to find consistency this season, especially on serve receiving. After losing to Lecanto, the 'Canes got a W at Westport, with strong blocking by Jackie White, Courtney Spafford and Rachel Fults.

Tonight: at Crystal River 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday: vs. Hernando, 6:15

CRYSTAL RIVER

The Pirates host Citrus tonight and under normal circumstances that might be a big deal. But Crystal River almost certainly will win this rematch. The big action this week comes at the Santa Fe Invitational, which should feature tough competition. In its last tournament, which it hosted a little more than a week ago, Crystal River lost in the semifinals to Lakeland. How will the Pirates respond this time?

Tonight: vs. Citrus, 6:30

Thursday: at Belleview, 6:30

Friday: at Santa Fe Invitational, TBA

Saturday: at Santa Fe Invitational, TBA

LECANTO

The Panthers have strengthened as the season has progressed. Lecanto won last week for the second time against Citrus. Strong blocking by Lecanto and effective placement has helped the Panthers play well against taller teams.

Tuesday: vs. North Marion, 6:30

Thursday at Dunnellon, 6

SEVEN RIVERS CHRISTIAN

The good news: The Warriors are ranked 8th in the state in Class A. The bad news: They share a district with the No. 2 team. Those squads likely will face each other again this weekend at the Pine Castle Tournament. Though the Warriors took two games in their last meeting with St. John, a Seven Rivers win would be a huge upset.

Today: at Bishop McLaughlin, 6:30

Friday: at Pine Castle Tournament, TBA

Saturday: at Pine Castle Tournament, TBA
