  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Football this week

CRYSTAL RIVER (0-5) AT HERNANDO (1-3)

WHEN: Friday, 7:30

THE LINE: Crystal River is still licking its wounds from Trinity Catholic's 56-0 pummelling. Can the Pirates regroup? Both Hernando and Crystal River have lost to Dunnellon, but the Leopards have the edge with running back Robert Smith. The Pirates can only hope the Leopards will fumble on kickoff again, which helped Dunnellon score two touchdowns late.

LECANTO (0-4) AT NATURE COAST (3-1)

WHEN: Friday, 7:30

THE LINE: The Panthers doubled their touchdown total with two by Jon Klabacka last week. But Lecanto will need a lot more defensive firepower to stop Nature Coast senior quarterback Josh Ortiz. The Sharks lead the district, though they struggled to score against Crystal River - unable to gain any points in the second half - in a 14-10 win. Can Lecanto do enough to earn its first win?
