USF golfer takes 3-shot lead

MIDDLETOWN , R.I. - South Florida junior Tyler Hitchcock leads the 65-player field by three strokes after the first round of golf at the Adams Cup of Newport held in Middletown, R.I.

Hitchcock had a first-round 4-under 68 Tuesday.

The USF men are tied for third with 297. Rhode Island leads with a team score of 295.

BASKETBALL: Five Niagara men's players will be disciplined whether or not they are convicted for their alleged involvement in an assault on a university baseball player last month. Athletic director Ed McLaughlin said the players, four of whom are under 21, at the least showed poor judgment for being at a bar late at night. The players are Charron Fisher, Stanley Hodge, Lorenzo Miles, Kamau Gordon and Javonte Clanton. ... The Duke women's team named seniors Alison Bales and Lindsey Harding as captains. Harding, a point guard, was the ACC's defensive player of the year last season. Bales is a center who holds the school record with 283 career blocks.

SOCCER: Sarah Groom had the winning goal two minutes into overtime to lead host Florida Southern 3-2 over Eckerd. ... Host Rollins beat Saint Leo 1-0 on a 49th-minute goal by midfielder Melissa Saint James.

VOLLEYBALL: Host Saint Leo swept Florida Tech 30-25, 30-28, and 30-24.
