Pediatrician prods parents to join Walk to School Day

SOUTH TAMPA - Local pediatrician Marcy Baker wants to keep school crossing guards busy.

In February, she persuaded nearly half of Dale Mabry Elementary School parents to walk with their children to school one day.

"My hope is that people will see that it's quick. It's healthy for you. It's healthy for your kid," she said.

Baker and her daughter Samantha, 7, enjoy the hike home from Mabry on pleasant Tuesday afternoons, Baker's short day at work.

Baker asked parents at Gorrie, Mitchell and Roosevelt elementaries to join Mabry on Wednesday for the International Walk to School Day.

"Try it out," she says. "Walk with friends; get out into the community."
