  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Picks to click

By JOHN C. COTEY, IZZY GOULD, and STEVE LEE

GREG JENKINS, QB, WESLEY CHAPEL

Gaither's defense is one of the best around, so gaining yards on the ground will be tough.

Really tough.

Through the air? Maybe not so tough. But with the Cowboys certainly focused on stopping running back Mario Melvin, opportunities will be there.

Jenkins has looked very good at times this year. He's hooked up with Michael Alvin (my backup pick to click, by the way) for some crucial scores, and throws a nice deep ball. Not to mention he's a dual threat. With many of the other county quarterbacks rising to the challenge, I think it's Jenkins turn tonight.

JUSTIN SMOTHERS, QB, PASCO

With each loss, Pasco players get more and more frustrated. This week, however, should end the Pirates' season of gut-wrenching losses and Hudson, another struggling team, is ripe for the pickings.

Smothers should have a field day against a Cobras secondary that surrendered three bombs on the first five plays against Land O'Lakes.

Pasco finally gets a win and Smothers has a 200-yard passing day with three touchdowns.

JAKE McFADDEN, RB, HUDSON

The rebuilding project at Hudson doesn't include McFadden, though coach Mark Nash probably wishes it did. The senior running back ranks second in county rushing with 800 yards and six touchdowns.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound McFadden gets plenty of touches as the Cobras try to shorten the game clock in hopes of winning. Though Pasco has plenty of good line play and the ability to stop the run, McFadden seems to find his way. Why not tonight against the Pirates?
