Citizens decision

By TOM ZUCCO
Published September 30, 2006

Three days before the Citizens Property Insurance board is scheduled to vote on a new president, Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty suggested that the state-run insurer conduct a nationwide search to find that person.

"The public and the policyholders deserve the benefit of an open and broad-range search," McCarty said in a letter to Citizens board chairman Bruce Douglas.

Bob Ricker announced Tuesday he will resign Nov. 1 as Citizens' president. Both Ricker and Douglas have recommended Citizens executive Scott Wallace be named the next president in a board meeting Monday.

Douglas initially questioned the need for a nationwide search costing up to $300,000. But on Friday, Douglas said he had "no problem" with the suggestion.

Under state law, Citizens must submit the name of a new president to the Florida Senate for approval.
