MacDill adjusts security measures

By TIMES STAFF WRITER

TAMPA - MacDill Air Force Base officials say an internal investigation found that security forces followed proper procedure when two teens being chased by police sped by gate guards onto the base Sept. 20.

Changes have been made to the base's security, but officials gave few specifics. A major one: A driver entering the base in the middle of the night will go through a traffic lane other than one next to the guardhouse.

"There are many different layers of security," wrote base spokesman Lt. Larry van der Oord. "Though individuals were able to gain access to the base, they were quickly caught," using an "appropriate level of force."

The teens drove past gate guards and more than a mile onto the base, passing U.S. Central Command.
