Strange odor prompts schools to keep kids in

A mysterious ammonia-like odor wafted over parts of eastern Hillsborough County Friday morning, prompting three schools to keep children inside while fire officials searched for its source.

They never found it, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley said.

About 25 firefighters, including a hazardous materials team, scoured the area from Big Bend Road north to Boyette Road and Balm-Riverview Road west to U.S. 301, he said.

Boy, 3, expected to survive near-drowning

ST. PETERSBURG - A 3-year-old was in critical condition but expected to survive Friday after a near-drowning at a backyard pool, a relative and police said.

The child was swimming at his grandmother's pool with family and friends at about 1 p.m. Friday, according to St. Petersburg police. After the group got out of the above-ground pool, at 701 43rd St. N, the child walked out of everyone's view, climbed the ladder and got back in.

The child, who was wearing a flotation device, was found floating facedown within two minutes, police said.
