Tech legend to finally get local recognition

Jimmy Wales won't feel like the Maytag repairman of the region's tech community for long.

Struck by a comment the founder of the popular Wikipedia Web site made to the St. Petersburg Times in September - "My wife and I always joke that if not for our daughter, we wouldn't know anybody in town" - the Tampa Bay Technology Forum decided that one of the world's emerging tech personalities needed some local attention.

So at next month's Industry Achievement Awards banquet in Tampa, the forum has invited Wales to be a guest of honor and plans to give him an award.

"This is probably the biggest legend we have living among us (in the tech community)" said Andy Hafer, the forum's president and CEO.
