The rich don't room with the rest of us

Motel 6 and AirTran might be good enough for those on a budget, but the upper crust has different preferences.

Orlando research firm YPB&R found travelers with household incomes of $150,000 or more pick Hyatt (50 percent) and Ritz-Carlton (45 percent).

For leisure trips, Ritz-Carlton noses out Hyatt. The runnersup in both categories: Four Seasons, Starwood and Marriott.

American Airlines tops the list for business travel air carriers (55 percent). After that, it's United, Delta and - surprise! - Southwest.

Holland America Line is preferred for cruises (15 percent), followed by Cunard and Windstar.

An interesting note: The rich really like independent hotels whose names start with "The." Among the top five: The Phoenican in Phoenix, The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and The Breakers in Palm Beach.
