For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
FEDS REPORT: Tortorella said Ruslan Fedotenko had no ill effects from Saturday's game in Dallas, his first of the preseason.
The right wing, who plays on a line with center Vinny Lecavalier, is rehabbing from a second straight offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.
"He's a little sore, which is to be expected," Tortorella said. "But he practiced well (Monday) and he feels good. He should be ready for Thursday."
IN GOOD HANDS: Much has been made Marc Denis' play as the No. 1 goaltender, but backup Johan Holmqvist got good reviews as well.
In three preseason games, Holm- qvist had a 4.74 goals-against average and an .854 save percentage. But his stats were deceiving.
He entered Saturday's game in the third period and got little help while allowing three goals. More indicative of his play was his 37-save effort against the Canadiens that Tortorella called "tremendous."
"It feels better and better every day," Holmqvist said. "I'm getting more and more comfortable and getting used to the (faster pace) from the European game."
TICKETS: A few thousand remain in all price ranges for Saturday's home opener against the Bruins.
PRACTICE: The team is scheduled to skate at 10:30 a.m. today at the St. Pete Times Forum. It is open to the public.
