BROOKSVILLE - There's a good chance you will be reading this exact story a year from now.
The top two golfers in Hernando County, at least judging by the Hernando County Athletic Conference match at Seven Hills on Monday, each have plenty of time left in their high school careers.
Central junior Tommy Bastien fired 71 and Hernando freshman Lauren Shuford shot 94 to claim medalist honors and lead their teams to the boys and girls titles.
Particularly impressive was Bastien, who shot 35 on the front and 36 on the back to finish with the lowest 18-hole round of his competitive career.
He wasn't spectacular, but he was consistent, bogeying one hole, birdieing another and parring the rest.
"I just hit every shot solid," said Bastien, who helped Central cruise to the team title. "I had a good ball-striking day."
Shuford was a little less satisfied with her performance, but both she and her team easily won their respective titles.
"I didn't do my best," Shuford said. "I keep on getting mad at myself."
Central's boys team placed all five of its golfers in the top 10. Senior Alex Coogan finished second overall with 76. Right behind him was Dante Galati, who shot 83. Cody Grey finished sixth with 85 and Nick Cantroppo finished eighth with 88.
Hernando's Derek Pebler and Springstead's Kevin Hubbard both shot 83 to finish in the top 5.
"I couldn't hit a putt," Pebler said. "I just couldn't make a putt."
Nature Coast finished second in the boys team standings, 46 strokes behind Central. Springstead was third; Hernando finished fourth.
