  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Nite Out

A blast from the past

Born in the 1970s as a hipster goof on the hoity-toity galas of Gasparilla krewes, the Artists and Writers Balls at the Cuban Club in Ybor City became legendary for their creativity and wild mix of costumed celebrants. The ball's 11-year run ended in 1988, but now you can live the legend: The Artists and Writers Reunion Ball, a small-scale warmup for a big blast in February, blooms from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday in its old haunts at the Cuban Club, 2010 Avenida Republica de Cuba, Tampa. Festivities include live music by Ronnie Elliott and Friends, the Vodkanauts, Seahorse Orchestra and more. Costumes, the wackier the better, are a big part of the fun (but if your time is short, just draw on a Dali mustache). Tickets are $35 advance, $45 at the door. For information, go to www.artistsandwritersball.com or call (813) 839-2132.
