Top five movies

By STEVE PERSALL
Published October 5, 2006

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. The Departed - Martin Scorsese proves again that nobody commits crime on screen like his characters. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon will slug it out for year-end acting nominations.

2. The Last Kiss - Tony Goldwyn's movie is messy, involves too many people and doesn't have a happy ending. Just like the romances it portrays.

3. Gridiron Gang - This fact-based story of juvenile offenders using football for rehabilitation is more than merely The Longest Yard 2.

4. Hollywoodland - Choose your mystery: Who killed TV's Superman, actor George Reeves (played by Ben Affleck), or why isn't Affleck this good all the time?

5. Open Season - Affable animated comedy about a bear (voice of Martin Lawrence) and a deer (Ashton Kutcher) lost in the wilderness.
