TAMPA - Off the heels of their fourth-place finish in the highly competitive Berkeley Premier volleyball tournament this past weekend, Plant vaulted to a No. 1 ranking in the latest Florida Sports Writers Association Class 5A poll.

The Panthers (14-2), ranked as high as second in previous polls, captured six of nine first-place votes and 87 points total to claim the top spot.

"All of the rankings and those things don't mean anything as far as what we need to do to achieve our goals," coach Leanna Taylor said. "Sure, it's fun, and we're appreciative of the notoriety. But, the girls are focused on being No. 1 in November."

Gainesville (15-1) received two first-place votes and is second with 78 points.

Plant has one more home game against Brandon on Tuesday before hosting district tournament play Oct. 16.

Plant is looking to capture its sixth state title this November and first since 2003.
