  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Fur may fly when tough foes tussle

NEWSOME HIGH WOLVES AT DURANT HIGH COUGARS

WHEN: Tonight, 7:30

WHERE: Durant High, 4748 Cougar Path, Plant City.

WHAT FOR: Two tough teams are coming off tough wins last week.

Durant (4-2, 1-0 in 6A-6) beat Sarasota on a last minute touchdown. Newsome (3-3, 1-1 in 4A-11) barely held on after going up early against Freedom.

Durant brings to the yard a ton of solid offensive backs and a stingy defense that forced three turnovers two weeks ago against Lakeland George Jenkins. It will be up to that defense to contain Newsome's backfield, which racked up 276 yards on 42 carries last week against Freedom, but gave up two fumbles.

WHAT FARE: Beef O'Brady's, 2561 State Road 60 E in Valrico. The black and blue burger (blackened steak burger covered with blue cheese dressing and onion rings) should be enough to prepare you for watching some rough football from the safety of the bleachers.

WHAT WEAR: Cutoff jeans and a tank top. Hey, it might be the last time you'll get the chance to wear such gear this year. Temperature at kickoff will be in the upper 70s, according to weatherunderground.com. Virtually no wind and humidity at 59 percent. Skies expected to be mostly cloudy with a slight chance of rain.

LAST YEAR: Newsome won handily, 50-10.

MASCOT MATCHUP: Both animals will be bloody at the end, but we think Cougars have it by a hair.
