Meet the candidates at Channelside chamber site CHANNEL DISTRICT - Emerge Tampa is presenting a Meet the Candidates forum from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce in Channelside. The forum will allow participants to network with more than 40 state and local political candidates in the Nov. 7 election. Art museum offers free Saturday classes for kids DOWNTOWN - The Tampa Museum of Art is offering a new Saturday morning art program for children, starting this week. The Art Spot program will help children explore their creativity by visiting the galleries and creating an art project in the museum's classroom. Each week will feature a different activity. The free classes are 10 a.m. to noon at the museum, 600 N Ashley Drive. No registration is required. Call 274-8130. UT has information session on its nursing program DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa's nursing program is having a free information session from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Plant Hall music room. The session will include details about the master of science degree in nursing, with concentrations in education, family nurse practitioner and adult nurse practitioner. Community plant sale to benefit children's club BAYSHORE GARDENS - Local landscaping company Exterior Decorating is hosting a community plant sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 3220 S MacDill Ave. Money raised will go toward a landscaping project for the local Boys & Girls Clubs. Military officer's group has its monthly luncheon MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE - The Tampa chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will host its monthly luncheon at 11 a.m. Thursday at the MacDill Air Force Base Officers' Club. Doug Woolward, director of athletics at the University of South Florida, will be the guest speaker. All active duty, Reserve, National Guard, retired and former officers are welcome. To reserve a seat, call 218-3413. Columbian Exposition is topic at Plant museum DOWNTOWN - Collector Stephen Sheppard will discuss the Columbian Exposition on Wednesday as part of the Henry B. Plant Museum's current exhibition, Trivial Pursuits of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Sheppard's presentation will take attendees back to 1893 using photographic images of the exposition and the people involved. The event at the University of Tampa's Plant Hall, 401 W Kennedy Blvd., is free for museum members, $5 for nonmembers. Call 258-7302. Group presents annual Columbus Day observance HYDE PARK NORTH - The Columbus Celebration of Tampa hosts its annual Columbus Day Commemoration Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Columbus Memorial Statue, at Bayshore Boulevard and Platt Street. Joe Teston will be the master of ceremony, and City Council member Rose Ferlita will be the guest speaker. Mainstream banking is the focus of Saturday program HISTORIC YBOR - The next Get Checking workshop begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, 1002 E Palm Ave. Get Checking is a program developed to help people who have never had a banking relationship or do not participate in mainstream banking because of a poor account management history. The program is designed to help consumers establish a primary banking relationship and gain access to mainstream financial services after successful completion of the six-hour course. County homeless coalition gets a $1.2-million award TAMPA - The Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County recently received a $1.2-million award from the Florida Department of Children and Families to focus on meeting the needs of homeless people. The award is the result of two statewide grant programs and represents a 34 percent increase over last year's awards. The funds will go to two Hillsborough County proposals: a women's transitional center by DACCO and a new transitional housing program by Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA for youth who have outgrown the foster care system. Ceremony marks the start of Ybor drainage project YBOR CITY - Residents and community leaders joined Mayor Pam Iorio on Tuesday for a ceremony signifying the start of construction for the Ybor City Outfall-15th Street Drainage Improvement Project. The project will be an upgrade to the existing stormwater service system and will help alleviate flooding. Construction will take place on 15th Street between Fifth and 10th avenues. The $2.73-million project is expected to be completed by May. Vacation raffle to benefit woman hurt in car wreck SEMINOLE HEIGHTS - Enter to win a weeklong vacation for two at a deluxe oceanfront hacienda in Mexico at the Starbucks on S Howard Avenue. The coffee house is holding a raffle to benefit employee Misty Schroeder, who was seriously injured in a car accident this year. Tickets are $50.
