Bring it on, Kohl's; JcPenney is ready

By MARK ALBRIGHT
Published October 7, 2006

Kohl's isn't the only mid-priced apparel retailer trying to woo shoppers with grand opening sales prices this weekend. One of the Tampa Bay area newcomer's fiercest competitors, JCPenney, is using the same pitch. Penney is touting completion of its own store remodelings in Port Richey and Westfield Citrus Park mall this weekend along with a Tyrone Square Mall store overhaul to be done in a few weeks. Kohl's arrival in Florida with a more upscale prototype store did not escape Penney's attention. In fact, eight of this year's 40 Penney store remodelings nationally are in the Orlando and Tampa Bay areas, where Kohl's first moved into the Sunshine State. "We're getting more aggressive about remodeling and new stores," said Tim Lyons, a Penney spokesman. Indeed, 17 of 20 new JCPenney stores in 2007 will be freestanding ones like Kohl's rather than in enclosed malls.
