Pilots will offer free flights for children and teenagers

CLEARWATER - Children and teens from ages 8 to 17 will have a chance to take to the skies today as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 282 hosts a Young Eagles Rally at the Clearwater Airpark, 1000 N Hercules Ave. The rally is part of a program to get young people interested in aviation. Since 1992, volunteer pilots have flown more than 1.1-million young people in more than 90 countries. Chapter 282 flew 103 local youngsters at the rally held last January. Pilots will talk about their airplanes and the value they place on safety. After a flight, each young person will receive a certificate, and his or her name will be entered into a logbook accessible on the Web at www.youngeagles.org. The rally includes a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and hot dogs and soda from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a nominal cost. Pilots volunteer their time and aircraft so that the flights can be provided free of charge. Those attending Saturday's rally are asked to come to the Clearwater Airpark terrace starting at 8:30 a.m. to register. Flights will begin at 9 a.m., with registration closing about 1 p.m. For more information about the association or the local chapter, check www.eaa.org or www.eaa282.org.

Inmate is found dead at Pinellas County Jail

A 51-year-old inmate at the Pinellas County Jail was found dead Friday morning in the facility's medical wing, the Sheriff's Office said. Neither foul play nor suicide was suspected, as the man's body showed no signs of trauma. Brian P. Cetnarowicz, who was known to have medical problems related to alcohol, had been arrested Thursday on a charge of possessing an open container of alcohol, sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bordner said. After he was booked into the jail, he was assigned to a medical wing, where he was housed with six other inmates. Then, about 10 a.m. Friday, jail staff tried to wake him for court and discovered he was unresponsive, Bordner said. In keeping with policy, detectives assigned to the sheriff's Homicide Unit and Administrative Investigation Division will investigate the death.
