Fourth equals league lead
By TIMES writer

A score of 8-under 64 at Dunedin Country Club by Belleair teammates Jack Brady and Cecil Rowe helped their club win Tuesday's second match of the Pinellas Men's Interclub season. But it was Countryside taking fourth in the 12-club league, and combined with its win last month, moved into first, one point ahead of Dunedin. The best two-man score in the better-ball format was posted by East Lake Woodland's John Ruggerio and Gene Taylor. Their 62 edged the Innisbrook pair of Jeff Pett and Steve Mihalek by a single stroke for low two-man team. Pro honors went to Bill Shriver, Belleview Biltmore's head pro and director of instruction. His 70 consisted of 15 pars, bogey, birdie and eagle. On the par-5 17th, measured at 471 yards, he only used an 8-iron to reach the elevated green an estimated 168 yards away. Draining the breaking 8-footer gave him the eagle 3 and his longest putt of the day. "Overall I was pleased with the round but I really didn't make many putts," Shriver said. "It was fun playing with my father, who is 70, down here visiting from Grafton, W.Va." They combined for 65. Among the pros, Jason Villagrana of Innisbrook finished second with 71, followed by Jim Slattery of Belleair 72 and Jeff Anderson (75) of Countryside. PRO APPOINTMENT: Slattery, director of golf at Belleair, recently hired Dean Headstrom as an assistant pro. Headstrom is a former head pro at St. Petersburg Country Club when it was named Lakewood. He comes here from Sun City Center in Hillsborough. STATE MID-AMATEUR: Wentworth club champion Patrick Olive, 34, not only qualified for match play at the 25th annual tournament at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, he won his first two match-play events to advance to the quarterfinals. Olive's wins over Tim Hume and Ed Kenny of Lake Worth pitted him against Noi Chay of Land O'Lakes, where he lost on the 18th hole, 1-down. Chay lost in the finals to Bret Vosin of Orlando, 2 and 1. CGA: Tom Smith and John Lisenbee won the better-ball match at Pasadena on Monday as they posted 4-under 68. The senior winners, Eddie Grant and Dave Reber, were two strokes higher at 70. There was a tie for first in the net division between Gary Shellenberger with Al Furtek and the team of Leroy Rainey and Elijah Willis. Dennis Williams of Tarpon Springs must like the course at Lansbrook. He shot 2-under 70 there last month not only winning the senior division but posting the best score overall by five strokes. Jim Montali was second (74) in that division. Clearwater's Barry Smith won the regular division (up to age 54) with 75; net honors went to Gary Shellengerger with 66 using his 17 handicap. CRIME STOPPERS CLASSIC: At Wentworth last week, the Pinellas Country Sheriffs shot 53 to edge Clearwater Executive by a stroke. The Sheriffs team consisted of Jeff Fresh, Joe Miner, Rachel Hughes and Nick Kelly. Clearwater Exec was represented by Paul Battle, Tony Perez, Nick Jones and Jerry Huston, the father of the PGA Tour's John Huston. Despite having a PGA pro ringer on its team, Bright House Networks settled for third with 56. Its lineup included former Clearwater mayor Brian Aungst, Ed Hooper, Ben Piehl and Greg McClimans, head pro at Tarpon Woods Country Club. PGA TOUR Q-SCHOOL: South Pasadena's Kyle McCarthy, who has been playing this year on the Hooters Tour, qualified for the first stage of Q-School at a pre-tournament qualifier last week at TPC of Tampa Bay in Lutz. McCarthy, who played for Canterbury School and Eckerd College, shot 5-under 279 (72-68-71-68) for fifth place in the field of 86. He'll compete in Stage 1 at Grasslands in Lakeland, Oct. 24-27. Those who reach the finals advance to either the PGA Tour or Nationwide Tour. McCarthy, a four time club champion at Pasadena, is playing this week in Duluth, Ga., in the Hooters Tour Championship. At Canterbury School, McCarthy played for coach Vaughn McCarthy, his father. This year Pasadena head pro Fred Curtis became the school's golf coach. LPGA: Brittany Lincicome tees it up Thursday in the Samsung World Championship at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif. She's coming off a fifth-place finish last month at the PAVV Invitational in South Korea. Those earnings, do not count toward her official LPGA total. The check from that event, however, is "in the mail," reports Angie Lincicome, Brittany's mother. Lincicome recently made a donation to the First Tee Program of St. Petersburg equaling the amount raised at the recent Pro-Am fund-raiser tournament at St. Petersburg Country Club, which she won. Two tournaments remain on Lincicome's 2006 schedule, both in November. The first is the no-cut LPGA Tournament of Champions in Mobile, Ala. The other is the LPGA Playoffs at the ADT, a first-year event, at Trump International in West Palm Beach. PARENT-CHILD TOURNAMENT: Darick and David Foderingham shot 11-under 63, winning the age 60-and-over division of last week's tournament at Clearwater Executive. Burt and Victoria Kinney took second with 77. In the 40-59 bracket, Robert and Tyler Navarro shot 78, winning by two strokes over Bob and Grant Wakefield. COLLEGES: Palm Harbor's Jeremy Evans shot 6-over 150 at last month's Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tenn., to lead Emory University to the team title. Evans attended Tampa Cambridge. - At Fort Myers, Rachel Edwards (Seminole High) had an opening round 1-over 73 for Daytona Beach CC at the Gulf Coast University Invitational. Her final-round 78 put her at 151. Danielle Jackson (Northside Christian), at Stetson, posted 157 (77-80). The third Pinellas freshman, Amber Petersen (Pinellas Park), playing for the host team, had 79-82-161 under windy conditions. ST. PETERSBURG CITY CHAMPIONSHIP: Jackson, a four-time winner of the event, won't be competing later this month at Mangrove Bay. The early favorites in the senior division are Charlie Goldson and Doug Root, reports Jeff Hollis, director of the city's golf courses.
