TRINITY - In football, a win is always important. But there is an added emphasis placed on that victory, however, when a team is heading into a bye week. Especially when said team is heading into the bye week with one victory in six chances.
That was the task at hand for Mitchell on Friday against Hudson, which also entered with a 1-5 record. Mitchell's defense held off the Cobras as the Mustangs jumped to a 38-8 lead en route to a 45-30 victory.
"We needed this," Mitchell coach Scott Schmitz said. "We needed something positive to build on. I would hated to go out there during this off week after a loss. Now at least we've got something."
After both squads opened up the game with three and outs, Hudson's Jake McFadden got the Cobras (1-6) on the scoreboard with an 18-yard run halfway through the first quarter. McFadden, who entered the game as the county's second-leading rusher with 848 yards, padded his total with 144 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
Following McFadden's run, Mitchell responded with a 31-yard field goal by Kevin Trapp, followed by a 21-yard touchdown reception by Jesse Dustin from Tate Humphrey. E.J. Booze added a 33-yard run on Mitchell's ensuing possession to give the Mustangs (2-5) an 18-8 lead at halftime.
Mitchell opened up the second half with two Tyrone Hendrix touchdown receptions from Humphrey on the first play of its first two drives. Hendrix's receptions were for 61 yards and 49 yards, respectively. Humphrey completed 7 of 13 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns. He added 55 yards on the ground, including a 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Hendrix finished with three catches for 140 yards and added an interception to thwart Hudson's attempt at a comeback.
