Investor's trick play fakes out NFL players

Offensive tackle Lomas Brown, who helped the Bucs win the Super Bowl, apparently won't be taking up strawberry farming in his retirement. He was one of a dozen people who lost a total of $1.2-million on a strawberry farming scheme.

The man behind it, sports agent and lawyer Robert Caron, was arrested last week for improper solicitation and management of investments. The 11 other victims include former National Football League players Aaron Pierce, Terry Irving, Jomo Cousins and Johnny McWilliams. Brown played for the Florida Gators and for four pro teams before joining the Bucs for the 2002 season.

Caron promoted the deals with promises of outlandish returns such as 10 to 25 percent every three weeks, said Vinse Gilliam, chief investigator for the Ventura County, Calif., District Attorney's Office. He said Brown was fortunate, losing "only" $30,000 of his $180,000 investment in Caron's company, Transglobal Funding.
