No Dagwood's to dine at yet

The first store for the startup restaurant chain was supposed to have opened in Coral Landings Shopping Center Palm Harbor by mid August. But construction plan changes stalled that until mid November at the earliest.

"It's a store design we hope to replicate over and over, so we want to be sure we've got it done right," said Frank Brown, vice president of development for the chain co-owned by Dean Young, the Clearwater Beach cartoonist who owns the popular comic strip.

Dagwood's is designed to be a fresh-made, quick-serve sandwich restaurant with seating for about 35 people. The comic strip-inspired decor includes huge graphics done in cartoon colors. Most of the sandwiches are priced at $4 to $5, but a signature sandwich few may dare to buy is a foot-tall Dagwood sandwich crammed with 1.5 pounds of cold cuts.

At the Palm Harbor store, changes in the air conditioning system were made to appease local building inspectors. Plumbing contractors suggested some alternatives to the drains in the former video game store that's being converted to a restaurant.

Meanwhile, two Dagwood's stores are expected to open within a few months in Pinellas, West Palm Beach and Louisiana. One is in Countryside, where Dagwood's will be part of new shopping center that will house a Total Wine Superstore and a Kohl's. Another will be under construction soon on W Bay Drive at Clearwater-Largo Road in Largo.

The would-be chain has sold area development rights for all of Florida except Miami-Dade County, Mobile, Ala., and two markets in Louisiana.
