Talk of the Bay

Wanted: Cheerleaders for local tourism

By STEVE HUETTEL
Published October 9, 2006

Tampa's tourism marketing agency is looking for people to drum up business for locals.

The idea: get people who belong to large organizations - professional groups, hobbyists, etc. - to bring their meetings to Tampa. It can be as easy as passing along tips to the Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau. Or as involved as pitching the city to meeting planners. In brochures promoting the "Talk up Tampa Bay" program, the CVB profiles Judi Jetson, who works at the University of South Florida and owns an Ybor City craft galley. She helped persuade the Handweavers Guild of America to bring its Convergence 2008 conference, and an expected 2,000 visitors, to Tampa.

The program used to be called "Hometown Heroes." But even tourism boosters thought that was a little over the top.
