CRYSTAL RIVER - The "mayor's awards" were presented Monday night to Person of the Year Ruth Levin for her work with the Key Training Center and other community organizations; and to Business of the Year Crystal Manatee Suites for turning around a formerly blighted business.

Sheriff attending conference on school safety in Washington

Sheriff Jeff Dawsy was in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday participating in the national Conference On School Safety. Dawsy was among the panelists for the "Preventing Violence In Schools" presentation.

Businessman appointed to Kids Central's board

Citrus County businessman Philip Courter is a new member of the Kids Central Inc.'s board of directors. Kids Central is the community care organization that serves Citrus, Hernando, Marion, Lake and Sumter counties. Courter of Crystal River is an award-winning film producer whose work centers on children and family issues. He is also the recipient of the Child Welfare League of America's Southern Region Board Leadership Award for his volunteer and child advocacy efforts.

Program that teaches children about voting needs volunteers

Kids Voting Tampa Bay is a partnership in Citrus County between Supervisor of Elections Susan Gill and school superintendent Sandra "Sam" Himmel. The program's mission is to produce educated, voting citizens and teach them about the rights, responsibilities and mechanics of participating in the democratic process. Local students will have the opportunity to vote at designated polling locations during the two weeks of early voting Oct. 23-Nov. 4 and then on Election Day, Nov. 7. At the closing of the polls, all ballots will be tabulated and the results released. Volunteers are needed for the program to help student voters cast ballots and deliver them and election gear to the headquarters. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and their names printed in a "Thank You" ad placed in the St. Petersburg Times after the election. Community service hours are available to high school volunteers. The International Student Exchange Program is seeking host families for students ages 15 to 18. Learn 'Ins and Outs of Weaving' at CFCC's Museum of Art

OCALA - The Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College offers students ages 9 to 14 the chance to learn weaving techniques from award-winning artist Betty Wyman. The "Ins and Outs of Weaving" camp will be from 4 to 5:45 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 31 through Nov. 14. The cost including materials is $90 for members and $99 for nonmembers. Class size is limited to 10 students, and the registration deadline is Monday .
