An overflow of perfection

SAC meets don't get much better than unbeaten Land O'Lakes vs. unbeaten Mitchell.

TRINITY - The best vs. the best is the theme of tonight's dual meet at the Trinity YMCA pool.

Boys and girls teams from host Mitchell and Land O'Lakes enter the 6 p.m. Sunshine Athletic Conference meet with a combined 30-0 record. Mitchell's girls and boys are 8-0; Land O'Lakes' squads are 7-0.

Something has to give, with the Mitchell girls and Land O'Lakes boys aiming for their fourth straight undefeated seasons.

"It's big," Land O'Lakes girls coach Robin Hilgenberg said. "Land O'Lakes boys coach Barbara Hayes and Hilgenberg even said winning this would be like winning state. We'd be excited."

Mitchell's boys have set team records each year since going winless in 2002. The Mustangs surpassed last year's six wins, adding two in last week's tri-meet with Zephyrhills and Ridgewood.

Despite the record, Mitchell boys coach Wayne Lampe avoided the ceremonial dunk in the pool by his swimmers, arguing he is saving that dip for a greater occasion. Oh, say, like a win tonight.

"I told them if they beat Land O'Lakes, then they can," Lampe said.

Realistically, Lampe said the Mitchell girls and Land O'Lakes boys are tonight's favorites.

"I think their top-notch swimmers are deeper than us and that's going to carry them," Lampe said. "If we're within 15 points or so I'll think we've done a good job."

Among the top scorers for each team are: Land O'Lakes - Andrew Busot, Victoria Colasurdo, Kody Kuhl, Brad Morrison, Tim Olson, Jayne Sakser, Paula Te, Nikki Walters; Mitchell - Renzo Alvarez, Kyle Bauld, Christina Clayton, Mike Dosal, Cayla Hanousek, Todd Hesser, Meghan McCaffrey, Caitlin McCaffrey, Natasha Obara, Sarah Salchert.
