Ethics Commission says no go to trash talk

A garbage disposal company had a job for State Rep. Ron Reagan, 52, of Bradenton: work part time polishing the company's image "through creative uses of the news media." Reagan asked the state Ethics Commission if it would be okay. No way, the staff concluded (after initially coming to the opposite conclusion). The opinion, which the commission will vote on Oct. 20, says it would be impossible to distinguish Reagan's dual roles. Reagan, recently re-elected without opposition to a third term, is chairman of the House Ethics and Elections Committee and on gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist's ethics policy council.

Georgia school opens Tampa campus

Universities and community colleges that have expanded nursing programs to meet Florida's growing health care needs have a new competitor. The Georgia-based South University will open a Tampa campus today at a ceremony that includes free tours and a welcome from Mayor Pam Iorio. South University, which also has a West Palm Beach location, is a private school accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The Tampa site, 4401 N Himes Ave., offers bachelor's degree programs in health science and nursing.
