Lieutenant governor surprises contest winner in visit to school

TAMPA - Seventh-grader Alia DiLullo knew little about Hispanic heritage before moving to Florida.

"Prior to living here my idea of Hispanic culture was what was on the menu of a Mexican restaurant," the Buchanan Middle School student wrote for the state's Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest.

In her essay, DiLullo described how she came to realize that Florida was not only a vacation spot but also the destination of Spanish explorers and Cuban exiles. She wrote about discovering customs that could make for better people and a better state.

It made an impression. On Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings paid a surprise visit to DiLullo at school to announce her as the middle school winner of this year's contest.

DiLullo, who is not Hispanic, won a four-year college tuition scholarship and a personal computer.
