Revisit silver's golden years

By LENNIE BENNETT

Silver used to be the go-to gift for life's special moments. At the birth of a child, give a silver baby cup or rattle. A wedding meant trays, bowls, flatware. A birthday? Picture frame.

Those days are mostly gone. But we can revisit them at "Marvelous, Magnificent Martele: American Art Nouveau Silver" opening today and continuing through Jan. 7 at the Florida International Museum, 244 Second Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

Martele was a particularly lovely line, handcrafted by Gorham Silver Co. from 1897 to 1912. This collection of about 400 objects, most functional, is on loan from collectors Robert and Jolie Shelton and the New Orleans Museum of Art. Shown here are a ewer and tray from 1905.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults with discounts for others. (727) 341-7901 or www.floridamuseum.org.
