Music

The well-tuned Betty Buckley

By JOHN FLEMING
Published October 12, 2006

Betty Buckley's stage career spans several generations of the Broadway musical. Her first role was in 1776. She won a Tony Award as Grizabella in Cats. She was in the legendary flop Carrie. She played Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.

Yet many people know Buckley best as the stepmother on the sitcom Eight Is Enough, or for her performance with Robert Duvall in the movie Tender Mercies.

In concert, she has a vast repertoire of songs ranging from Memory and With One Look from her hit shows to standards like Lush Life, Imagine and September Song. Lately, she has been performing a jazz-influenced show.

A few factoids (gleaned from the singer's Web site www. bettybuckley.com): Buckley majored in journalism at Texas Christian University and was a reporter at the Fort Worth Press. She was Miss Fort Worth and runner-up for Miss Texas. She has a ranch in Texas and shows cutting horses.

Buckley performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. $25-$60. (727) 892-5767; www.mahaffeytheater.com.
