Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. The Departed - Martin Scorsese proves again that nobody commits crime on screen like his characters. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon will slug it out for year-end acting nominations.

2. Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival - The final weekend of this annual showcase of independent cinema offers movie lovers a perspective not usually seen in mainstream releases.

3. Gridiron Gang - This fact-based story of juvenile offenders using football for rehabilitation is more than merely The Longest Yard 2.

4. Open Season - Affable animated comedy about a bear (voice of Martin Lawrence) and a deer (Ashton Kutcher) lost in the wilderness.

5. Infamous - See this interesting but inferior biography of author Truman Capote to compare it to last year's award-winning Capote. Or just rent that film again.
