  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Tonight's games

By DAWN REISS
Published October 13, 2006

CITRUS (3-3, 1-0) VS. NATURE COAST (5-1, 2-0)

WHEN: 7:30, tonight

ADMISSION: $5

THE SKINNY: It's the big one. The top district contenders meet tonight. Whoever wins likely secures the Class 3A, District 6 title. If Nature Coast wins, the Sharks are guaranteed one of the two playoff spots. The 'Canes have two more district games, against Crystal River and Hernando, which they should easily win. The 'Canes won their first and only previous meeting with Nature Coast last year 34-12. The bulk of Nature Coast's offense comes from quarterback Josh Ortiz while junior Bradley Paul takes over as Citrus' new starting quarterback.

LECANTO (0-6, 0-1) VS. Hernando (1-5, 0-1)

WHEN: 7:30, tonight

ADMISSION: $5

THE SKINNY: This is Lecanto's best chance to earn a win. Crystal River's lone win in a 1-6 season came against Hernando. That doesn't mean it will be easy. The Panthers have struggled, marked by the look of an 0-10 season. Despite showing flashes of improvement, Lecanto has yet to produce four solid quarters. The Panthers worked on punting this week but need drastic improvement to get a W.

RECENT HISTORY:

2005 Hernando 38-20

2004 Lecanto 25-7

2003 Hernando 15-6

2002 Hernando 21-7
