NORTH TAMPA - Chamberlain senior Sarah Fisher, Wharton sophomore Shena Yang and Gaither senior Matt Cooney won medalist honors in golf district playoffs this week. Wharton followed Yang's lead and won its first team championship in the Class 2A, District 11 girl's tournament. By placing in the top three as teams, Gaither, Chamberlain and Wharton's boys also qualified for next week's regional tournament. Gaither and Sickles girls also earned team regional berths. 2A GIRLS RESULTS Wildcats Alexandria Irish and Michelle Bermudez scored 75 and 80, respectively, to give Wharton a 1-2-4 finish. Katherine Demick shot 89 for ninth, helping provide a team score of 314, 20 strokes better than second-place Durant. By needing only a single putt on 16 of the 18 greens, Yang said her 70 is her lowest score ever. She scored a pair of bogies on the back nine, which kept her out of the 60s. She said one of her goals at the regional meet is to break 70. The other is to help her team win or place second to qualify for the state championships. In the 2A, 10 meet at the Silver Dollar Golf Course, Alonso teammates Kaitlyn Yarbrough shot 98 and Theresa Valder 102 to earn individual berths in the 2A regional meet Monday at Rogers Park Golf Course in Tampa. The top three teams and the top three individuals (not on a qualifying team) earn trips to the regionals. Fisher won medalist honors in 2A, 10 with a 76. Chamberlain placed fourth in team competition, but Fisher qualified for regionals as an individual. Led by Francesca Pierre's 83, Gaither's girls finished second in team scoring in 2A, 10 with 356 points. Plant won with 339. Behind Amanda Bair's 85, Sickles placed third with a team score of 383. 2A BOYS RESULTS Cooney's 70 was the lowest score in the 2A, 10 meet, at the Rocky Point Golf Course. His low helped Gaither score 323, for second place, 10 points behind the district champions from Plant. Chamberlain finished 10 points behind Gaither for third place and the final regional team berth. In the 2A, 11 meet at Summerfield Crossing, Wharton scored 317 to nudge out Riverview for the third and final team berth for next week's regional tournament. Alonso's Ryan Miller scored 85 and earned a berth in the regional meet as an individual. UP NEXT The boys and girls regional golf tournaments are Monday and Tuesday. All volleyball districts will compete Monday through Friday.
