Video report
- For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Youths flock to Countryside Lanes
By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published October 13, 2006
One of the nation's premier scratch youth tournaments is here once again. This weekend at Countryside Lanes, Chris and Mary Loschetter will invite all USBC-sanctioned bowlers to participate in 10 games on Saturday, with the top 12 in each division rolling an all-day round robin. The final five will go on to a television-style roll off in hopes of earning scholarships and an entry into the prestigious 2007 Premier Tournament held in New York in July. The Loschetter Family, a staple of youth bowling in the area, are the proud parents of C.J. Loschetter, a PBA Tour regular. They have developed and prepared many young athletes to succeed in the college and professional ranks, using all of their resources to enhance opportunities for the children. Likewise, their tournament has become the single best youth scratch venue in the state, and one of the biggest in the country. C.J. will attend along with a full house of kids coming from all over Florida and some out of the state. Walk-ins will be accepted with a $60 entry fee. Saturday's check-in is at 11 a.m. with bowling beginning at noon. All fees are handed back to bowlers in scholarships. Bowlers need to bring a standard bowling shirt - preferably with their name on their back - standing sheets, books averages and their SMART scholarship information. NABI: Bill O'Brien of Bradenton took home the $195 first-place prize last week at AMF Venice, defeating Mark Michel of Lutz 211-196 in the final pairing. O'Brien averaged 158 for the weekend while Michel earned $55 in second with a 191 average. Club 577 will be at AMF Lakeland Sunday, starting at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The jackpot is at $125 with a strike-pot of $56. There is a senior cut for both squads. Call (863) 667-4779 for more details.
