Teen is charged in boy's shooting

ST. PETERSBURG - After purchasing a revolver on the street, 18-year-old Steven Adams Jr. started to play with it in front of his cousin.

The .38-caliber handgun fired. Adams shot his 13 year-old cousin, Jullian Romano, in the chest Saturday morning.

St. Petersburg police said the shooting was accidental but arrested Adams on Thursday on misdemeanor charges of culpable negligence and marijuana possession.

Adams faces the negligence charge because he should have known not to pull back the hammer of a loaded gun while pointing it at a youth, police said.

Romano was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, but police say the boy's condition has significantly improved and that he is doing well now.

On Friday night, another youth accidentally shot and killed himself in the 2000 block of Upton Court S while playing with a handgun. Police say they have not been able to learn how 15 year-old Maurice Addison Jr. obtained the weapon.
