CLEARWATER - One of the benches at Clearwater Central Catholic was turned into a podium Friday night as the Marauders celebrated their 10th consecutive year qualifying for the postseason.
As time ticked down in the Marauders' 20-14 victory over Frostproof (5-2), coach Michael Jalazo leaped onto the bench and thrust a fist into the air.
"That was about all the fans who support us all the time," Jalazo said. "That was for all the people who wrote us off."
The game was tied at 14 in the fourth quarter when Frostproof completed an apparent go-ahead touchdown pass, but the play was negated on a penalty. One play later, female kicker Adiline Alvarado attempted a 34-yard field goal, but was short after a bobbled hold messed up the play.
With 4 minutes, 54 seconds to go in the game, Jalazo sent his field-goal kicker, Jeff Ijjas, onto the field for a 40-yard attempt. Ijjas not only made the kick, but late in the game he added a second field goal from 42 yards out. His two field goals proved the difference for CCC (5-3).
"It was a no-brainer," said Jalazo, referring to the decision to kick two long field goals. "He's come through for us all year. We thought about running (on fourth down) but not the way he was booting the ball."
