Run with the sheriff's office in 5K event

Registration is open for the sixth annual Run with the Sheriff 5K Cross-Country Challenge, sponsored by the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. The event will be Oct. 28 at Central High School, 14075 Ken Austin Parkway. Final check-in will be at 7 a.m., with the race starting at 8. A Kids Fun Run will be immediately after the 5K challenge. Awards will be given to overall first-place finishers in the male, female and masters categories, and also for the first three finishers in each five-year age group from 14 to 75 and older. Registration is $10 in advance and $15 on the day of the event. T-shirts will be given to all runners who preregister, and medals will be awarded to all Kids Fun Run participants. A printable registration form is available on the sheriff's Web site at www.hernando sheriff.org. Proceeds will benefit the Hernando County Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services, which assists in the funding of programs such as DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training) and other youth-based educational programs offered by sheriff's personnel in local schools. Brooksville Central High's band sets concert, dinner Central High School's Raging Bear Brigade Marching Band and Band Boosters will host a musical dinner extravaganza at 6 p.m. Friday at the school, 14075 Ken Austin Parkway. A spaghetti dinner and dessert will be provided by the band boosters in the cafeteria. After dinner, there will be music by the Raging Bear Brigade. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Oktoberfest at Marine Corps detachment Marine Corps League Deatchment 708 will host an Oktoberfest celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 28 at the detachment, 8405 Sunshine Grove Road. The cost is $12 and will include bratwurst and hot dogs, hamburgers, sauerkraut, German potato salad, red cabbage and a bottomless keg. The lounge will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for other beverages. Entertainment will be provided by Brian Chytka, who will perform country music with a "dash of German." Weather permitting, the event will be outdoors. For information, call 597-7979. Demonstration by Highwayman is Friday Demonstrations and discussions with Highwaymen painter R.L. Lewis will be from 1 to 2 p.m. and again from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in the council chambers at Brooksville City Hall, 201 Howell Ave. The event is offered as part of the Founders Week celebration. Genealogy workshop is set for Saturday The Daughters of the American Revolution, Winding Waters Chapter, will host a genealogical workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane. Fundraiser benefits visitation center The 2006 class of Leadership Hernando, a program of the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce, will host "A Taste of Leadership" from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 28 to raise funds for the Hernando County Visitation Center. The event will include gourmet food and wine. The cost is $50 per person or $80 per couple.
