TAMPA - Palm Harbor U. and East Lake fell to tough competition, strong winds and fast, sloping greens in Monday's Class 2A, Region 4 tournament at Rogers Park Golf Course, but stayed close. PHU was fifth with a score of 387 and East Lake (428) was seventh. In a very tight battle for the championship, Durant won at 355, followed by Wharton at 359, Plant 360 and Mitchell 366. Mitchell's sharp senior Emily Van Etten captured medalist honors with 75. Even with all the adjustments she was forced to make on the front nine, she was able to get back by shooting par on all holes on the back nine. "The ninth hole really tripped me up by forcing my ball into the trap and I felt lucky to get a seven," she said. "Shooting par on all nine in the back helped make up for the bad front nine." Whitney Wenclaz shot 84 for East Lake's lowest score. Other Eagles to count toward the team score were Alisa Burnham (104), Jessica Ringelspaugh (134) and Kelly Shea (126). For PHU, Breanna Heinzer shot 40 on both nines for a Pinellas County low of 80. Karsen Lattimore shot 93 for Palm Harbor and Kathy Torro added 125.
