Wildcats making steady progress

JACKSONVILLE - Wesley Chapel coach Scott Boyd said his team's goal entering the Class 2A, Region 2 girls golf tournament was to improve on last year's last-place finish.
The Wildcats did move up, finishing seventh of nine teams at 390, but their improvement wasn't enough for a trip to the state tournament.
"We knew we were third in districts, so it was going to be tough for us to be second in the regional," Boyd said. "We did better than last year, so that's an accomplishment."
The Wildcats, playing only four golfers, were led by junior T.J. Adipietro's 7-over 79. Sam Friese shot 89, Natalie Wells 99 and Brooke Albritton 123 for Wesley Chapel.
Lecanto shot 424 to finish eighth. Sophomore Caitlyn Tripp led the Panthers at 101, followed by Carla Savage (102), Karina Kronsis (107) and Kate Sobelman (114).
Lake Mary, behind Jessica Schall's 2-over 74, won the team title at 318. Ponte Vedra Beach Nease edged Flagler Palm Coast by two strokes with 325 to claim the second state qualifying spot.
Megan Hughes, an individual qualifier from New Smyrna Beach, shot 1-over 73 to earn medalist honors and a trip to state as an individual.
