Cross Creek authority will speak at library

OCALA - J.T. Glisson, author of The Creek and Guardian Angel 911, will talk about Cross Creek and Cracker life at 6 p.m. Tuesday in meeting room C of Marion County Public Library, 2720 E Silver Springs Blvd. Glisson was a neighbor to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of many books including Cross Creek and The Yearling. Glisson will also read from his works, tell colorful anecdotes, answer questions and sign his books.

This presentation is part of the One Book/One Community Program, which encourages everyone in Marion County to read The Yearling and participate in the activities planned during the program period, which ends on Nov. 4.

Public invited to learn about our waterways

CRYSTAL RIVER - The Kings Bay Association will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at Coastal Region Library, 8619 W Crystal St. Thomas Singleton, environmental consultant with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, will talk about the total maximum daily loads allowable in the Crystal River and Kings Bay.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a total maximum daily load or TMDL is a calculation of the maximum amount of a pollutant that a body of water can receive and still meet water quality standards, and an allocation of that amount to the pollutant's sources.

The public is invited to attend and volunteer to help our waters. Call 564-1725.

Meeting will discuss pandemics, disasters

LECANTO - The Citrus County Sheriff's Division of Emergency Management, in cooperation with Nature Coast Volunteer Center, will conduct a disaster preparedness meeting from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 26 at the volunteer center, 2804 W Marc Knighton Court. The meeting is for not-for-profits, faith-based groups and funeral homes. Speakers from Emergency Management and the Citrus County Health Department will discuss the health issues in a pandemic influenza and other disaster situations.

Conservation group meeting Oct. 26

INVERNESS - TOOFAR will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the East Citrus Community Center, 9907 E Gulf to Lake Highway (State Road 44 E). Guest speaker will be state Sen. Nancy Argenziano. Multicounty indigence service group to meet

TAVARES - The Indigence Service Committee serving Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion and Sumter counties will meet at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 26 on the second floor, Suite 6 of the Lake County Judicial Center, 550 W Main St.

Coalition offers help to homeless, veterans

INVERNESS -The 2006 Homeless Outreach and Veterans Stand Down is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 960 S U.S. 41. Services and participating organizations include:

-Free medical and dental care provided for those with no other means to receive treatment

-Eye screening (for near and farsightedness); glaucoma and hearing testing provided by the Lions Club

-HIV/AIDS testing and counseling by Project Healthy Choices

-Flu and tetanus vaccine and blood pressure by Citrus County Health Department

-Veteran program from 9 a.m. to noon, One Stop Workforce Connection

-DAV service van and numerous other VA services for homeless veterans

-Childhood Development Services (Head Start, subsidized child care, etc.)

-Citrus Hearing Impaired program services

-Mid-Florida Community Legal Services

-Pregnancy and Family Life Center

-Information on domestic abuse and violence, services of CASA

-The Transition House, veteran per diem housing

Talk will help birders identify shorebirds

HOMOSASSA - Birders are invited to a free presentation on shorebirds from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Florida room of the Visitor Center, Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, 4150 S Suncoast Blvd. The presentation by lifelong birder and part-time tour guide Murray Gardler will focus on solving difficult identification problems. Coast Guard Auxiliary program starts Nov. 6

HOMOSASSA - The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-04 is offering the second half of its Basic Skills and Seamanship program from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays beginning Nov. 6 at the West Citrus Community Center, 8940 W Veterans Drive. The last meeting is on Tuesday, Nov. 21. The program will cover navigation, weather, lines and knots and VHF radio. The fee is for materials only; ask for a required supply list when registering.
