Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Footwear now can flip-flop

By TIMES WIRES
Published October 19, 2006

The sound of flip-flopping feet will no longer bring disciplinary sanctions in the Hernando County schools. By a vote of 3-2, the School Board decided Tuesday night to remove sandals or flip-flops from the list of banned apparel under the student Code of Conduct. Last month, a group of Hernando High School students told the board it was unfair to penalize them for wearing the footwear, and officials said a majority of principals opposed the ban. "I have concerns about safety," superintendent Wendy Tellone said Tuesday, referring to the possibility of tripping. "But when 15 out of 20 principals recommend something, I listen." Board member Sandra Nicholson voted against the measure, saying only schools that earn an "A" grade from the state deserve the privilege. She was joined by board Chairman Jim Malcolm.

Hernando again scores in lottery

More lottery luck for Hernando County: The Florida Lottery announced Wednesday that three players matched all five winning numbers in the Tuesday FANTASY 5 drawing. Two of those winning tickets were bought at gas stations in Broward County. The other was bought at the Fast Lane Express Quick Pick at 13045 Spring Hill Drive. John Jacobs, 66, of Spring Hill claimed his prize of $76,180.02, becoming the county's 10th winner in as many months of various lottery games. Of the 67 counties in Florida, only five have had more Lotto and Mega Money winners than Hernando in 2006, and all of those five are much larger counties. Hernando has had more lottery success this year than Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. "Really," lottery spokeswoman Shelisha Durden said earlier this month, "there is no explanation."
