Regionals too tough to master
By DAVID MURPHY
Published October 19, 2006
Golf season in Hernando County is officially over. The county entered the week with one team (Central), two individual girls (Hernando's Lauren Shuford and Megan Gillis) and one individual boy (Hernando Christian's Derek Martin) in contention, but none moved on to state. Central had the best shot of any of the parties involved, but the Bears could not overcome one of the strongest regionals in the state. Look at it this way: Even if Central had equalled the 299 it shot en route to winning last week's district match, the Bears still would not have qualified for states. Granted, Central shot worse than that, combining for a 331 for seventh in the eight-team field. But the scores put up by the top three teams - 281 from Lake Mary, 287 from Spruce Creek and 298 from Nease - were outstanding. The individuals competing didn't fare much better. Shuford, only a freshman, shot 96 at Lake Diamond Golf and Country Club. The top two individual finishers shot 75 and 76. Gillis shot 118. Martin, meanwhile, shot 89 at Haile Plantation, 12 strokes behind the top individual qualifier. LACROSSE MEETING SCHEDULED: The Hernando Lacrosse Club, which formed last season, will hold a kickoff meeting/open registration session Wednesday at the Anderson Snow Park Baseball Pavilion. For more information, contact the Hernando County Recreation Department at (352) 754-4031. BASEBALL TRYOUTS: The West Florida Young Guns AAU competitive baseball club 12-under team based in Hudson is looking for players who do not turn 13 until after April 30. Contact Jim at (727) 919-0410 or Chris at (727) 919-8954 for tryouts.
