  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Top five movies and upcoming releases

Published October 19, 2006

Top five movies

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Flags of Our Fathers - Clint Eastwood's epic retelling of the Iwo Jima flag-raising during World War II charges to the forefront of Oscar contenders.

2. The Departed - Martin Scorsese proves again that nobody commits crime onscreen like his characters. Leonardo DiCaprio (above), Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon will slug it out for year-end acting nominations.

3. Keeping Mum- A homicidal nanny (Maggie Smith) solves problems for a bumbling vicar (Rowan Atkinson) in a shrewd British comedy.

4. Open Season - Affable animated comedy about a bear (voice of Martin Lawrence) and a deer (Ashton Kutcher) lost in the wilderness.

5. Infamous - Interesting but inferior biography of author Truman Capote. Compare it with last year's award-winning Capote. Or just rent that again.
