District 53: Democrat

Rick Kriseman

When Democrat Rick Kriseman launched his first political campaign, his current opponent was still in high school. Not that Kriseman, 44, has been in politics that long. But his Republican opponent, Thomas Piccolo, 23, just graduated from college this year.

The difference in age translates into a significant difference in experience as well. Kriseman, a lawyer, has served admirably for two terms on the St. Petersburg City Council. He has ably balanced the needs of economic growth with neighborhood and environmental concerns. He has a solid knowledge of District 53, which covers north-central St. Petersburg.

Kriseman would be particularly helpful in the upcoming legislative debate over property taxes, because he has seen how decisions in Tallahassee affect local governments. Contrary to some misguided rhetoric lately, owners of existing homestead property in St. Petersburg will pay a lower city tax bill this year. Kriseman understands how tax relief is needed, however, particularly for rental property to help maintain affordable housing.

Piccolo is a bright, pleasant young man who wants his first job out of college to be as a state lawmaker. A few more years of life experience will make him a better candidate in the future.
