Shorecrest boys and girls repeat as district champs

ST. PETERSBURG - It was at last year's St. Pete City Meet that Jill St. Louis said Shorecrest made the turning point on its way to both the boys and girls Class 1A District 8 championships - the first in school history. With a decent showing at City again this year, a Bay Area Conference title last week and - as of Saturday night - the boys and girls district titles again, this year's turn is now complete.

Josh Gordon did his job, doubling in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly with lifetime bests on the boys side. But it was efforts like Henry Samuel's 100-yard breaststroke win that brought a smile to Gordon's face after a long night at the North Shore Complex.

"We wanted to take this again," said Gordon, a senior among many underclassmen. "We had great depth, and everyone swam well."

The Chargers (398 points) edged the surprising Cardinal Mooney by 100 points.

Northside Christian's Casey Caldwell helped the Mustangs to third place (255) with a win in the 200-yard individual medley. But Shorecrest sixth-grader Jack Stein's second-place finish in diving along with solid points from Ben Sabol gave the Chargers the boys title.

St. Petersburg Catholic's Kelsey Krauss and her two wins gave Shorecrest a scare late, but Jackie St. Louis, the 200-yard medley relay team, and divers Hannah Stein and Rachel Thigpen were too much to overcome with 362 points to the Barons' 349.
